He waited until the last minute…literally. But local baseball phenom Bryce Harper has agreed to terms on a major league contract with the Washington Nationals. The deal is reportedly for five years and just under $10 million, but according to Harper it wasn’t official until 20 seconds before Monday’s midnight deadline. The 17-year-old Harper was the number one overall pick in June’s amateur draft after one season at the College of Southern Nevada. Harper, who played catcher in college, but is expected to move to the outfield professionally, hit .443 with 31 home runs and 98 RBIs in 66 games last season for CSN. He also captured the Golden Spikes Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top amateur player. Harper left Las Vegas High School after his sophomore year and completed his GED so he could enroll in college and be eligible for the major league draft earlier.
